Description:

A fine French Louis XV period, marquetry commode galbée (curved) stamped, “MONDON”, by its maker François I Mondon (c. 1693-1775), on the front left panel. The commode is made of “bois de violet” (tulipwood) and “bois de rose” (kingwood). The curved front opens with four drawers on three rows. There is chiseled and gilded bronze ornamentation, which can be attributed to Jacques Guinard, of a shell on the apron with busts of women at each front corner. The feet are adorned with the decoration of turned and spiraling acanthus leaves. The rouge marble is from Flanders.

The same angled corners with a women’s head motif are found on several commodes by Etienne Doirat. The shape of this commode is found on many of Mondon’s commodes (e.g. Sale Étude Tajan, Paris, July 8, 1999, Lot 601 and Sale Étude Milon, Paris, March 16, 1998, Lot 112).

François I Mondon

François I Mondon was received as master craftsman around 1730. He collaborated several times with the furniture maker of the crown, Gilles Joubert. Several pieces delivered for the crown by Joubert were in fact stamped by Mondon.

Jacques Guinard

Jacques Guinard was a bronze maker and “marchand mercier”. His second wife was Marie-Geneviève Mondon from the family of cabinetmakers and Adrien Dubois’ widow. Guinard provided many cabinetmakers bronze garnitures for furniture including M. Curot, E. Doirat, A. Dubois, G. Feilt, D. Genty, A.L. Gilbert, Pierre II and Pierre IV Migeon, François I, François II, François-Alexandre and François-Adrien Mondon, L. Moreau, P. Moulin, J.F. Oeben, N. Petit, C. Revault, Bernard II and Bernard III van Risambourg.
